Creative Generation
Creative Generation is a suite of programs offered by the Department of Education that celebrates high school students' achievements in music, performing arts, and visual art.
The programs offered under the Creative Generation banner are:
- Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Instrumental Music
- The Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Instrumental Music is a biennial event offering a residential extension program for up to 80 musically outstanding students (MOST) from Queensland state secondary schools.
- Creative Generation – State Schools Onstage
- Creative Generation—State Schools Onstage (CGEN) provides students, teachers and school communities the opportunity to be involved in a professionally produced, award-winning arena spectacular. With up to 1,500 student participants, CGEN is nationally renowned for its outstanding and vibrant display of state school talent.
- Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art
- The Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art recognise and promote excellence in senior visual art education throughout Queensland state and non-state schools.
- Creative Generation Choral Fanfare
- Choral Fanfare is a biennial festival of choirs from Queensland state schools to promote and celebrate school-based choral music programs. Participation from more than 10,000 state school students showcases the outstanding vocal talent of students through performance.
- Creative Generation Instrumental Fanfare
- Instrumental Fanfare is the biennial statewide festival of bands and orchestras from Queensland state schools. It highlights the exciting music making that occurs in school-based ensembles. The emphasis for Instrumental Fanfare is on improving the quality of ensembles, promoting the highest possible standard of performance, striving for excellence and encouraging participation.
The Instrumental and Choral Fanfare programs are offered in alternate years.

Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools
The Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools are presented annually to Queensland state schools with excellent practices that significantly improve outcomes for students.
The program aims to:
- recognise, celebrate and reward excellent teaching practice in state schools
- foster a learning culture that supports sharing excellent practices
- create professional development opportunities
- promote public education.
Premier's Reading Challenge
The Premier's Reading Challenge is an annual statewide initiative for state and non-state schools and home-educated students up to Year 9, as well as children (aged up to 5 years) enrolled in an early childhood centre, and individual home readers.
The Premier's Reading Challenge encourages students to develop a love of reading for life and to explore and enjoy a wide range of texts. It is not a competition.
It is open to state, Catholic and independent schools, early childhood centres and home-education students.
Individual students, individual classes or whole schools can enter.
Everyone completing the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier.
State Education Week
During State Education Week state schools across Queensland open their doors to the community to showcase the talent and achievements of their students and teachers.
P&C day is also celebrated during this week to acknowledge the important work of parents and citizens associations.
State Education Week will be held Sunday 20 October to Saturday 26 October 2019.
World Teacher's Day
Every day, Queensland teachers make a difference by educating and inspiring young Queenslanders.
World Teachers' Day is a chance to acknowledge our teachers and say thanks. It is celebrated in more than 100 countries worldwide.
When is it?
International day : 5 October each year.
Queensland : Friday 29 October 2021. (As the international day usually falls during school holidays, Queensland celebrates on the last Friday of October each year.)
