Supporting your students
You should identify any special support requirements a student may have before they start their course. They may need additional services to successfully complete their training.
The 2025 standards for registered training organisations (RTOs) defines your organisation's responsibilities in relation to access and equity, and associated management systems.
Language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) support
The Australian Government offers support to adults for the development of LLND skills:
- Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program provides training for eligible people whose skills are below the level considered necessary to secure sustainable employment or pursue further education and training.
- Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) provides free English language courses to eligible migrants and humanitarian entrants.
- If you are a Skills Assure Supplier and the student is participating in a government funded training course, the student may be eligible for foundation skills—learn more about foundation skills.
Students with disability
Under the Australian Government's Disability Discrimination Act 1992, you must ensure, as far as practical, that people with disability are treated equally to the rest of the community.
The guidelines for making reasonable adjustment for learners with a disability will help you meet your obligations.
Skills Disability Support
Skills Disability Support helps RTOs support eligible students with disability.
To be eligible, RTOs must be an approved Skills Assure Supplier and learners must be undertaking a government funded training course. There is no charge to you or the student to use this service.
Skills Disability Support provides:
- assistive technology (equipment and/or software), and training in its use for students and RTO staff
- support people for students (such as Auslan interpreters or note takers)
- assessment of student educational support needs.
Support is based on individual requirements and will vary.
