Understanding flood warnings
Flood warnings in Queensland
All Queenslanders should be familiar with official flood warnings to be able to seek information, make decisions and act.
For flood warnings, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) uses data and information captured by the various types of flood warning infrastructure.
In Queensland, local councils may also issue action-focused flood warnings for their local area. These warnings may be shared on social media, local council websites or disaster dashboards. They may even be read out over the radio or on the news.
These warnings are recognisable by their warning levels, colours and icons (see below). These warnings will also have a clear action telling people what they need to do stay safe, such as “Prepare to Leave” or “Leave immediately”.
