Swimming in Croc Country
Swimming or snorkelling in Croc Country puts you at risk of a crocodile attack.
Even a quick swim or wading in water can be risky. Crocodiles often attack in knee-deep water, where large crocodiles can be undetectable.
Crocodiles can be found in all waterways and oceans in Croc Country. The only way to completely stay safe is to stay out of the water. The only place with no crocodile risk is a swimming pool.
However, if you choose to risk swimming in Croc Country:
- Swim in full daylight—never at dawn, dusk or at night.
Crocodiles prefer to hunt in low light.
- Only swim in clear water where you can see the bottom.
Crocodiles can still be found in clear water, but it’s easier to spot them approaching.
- Swim between the flags at patrolled beaches.
There are always people watching the water for crocodiles.
Visit the Surf Life Saving Beachsafe website for a list of patrolled beaches . - Do not swim after heavy rain and floods.
Crocodiles move around in high waters and can turn up in unexpected places.
- Do not swim in murky water.
Crocodiles become invisible in shallow, murky water.
