You can access our state-owned dams for recreational activities, including camping, fishing and boating.
Safety considerations
Your safety is vital.
Take responsibility for your safety by:
- looking for potential hazards and risks before entering the water (e.g. rocks and tree branches near the shoreline)
- being prepared for your activity with appropriate equipment and safety gear (e.g. life jackets)
- always reading and complying with the available signs near structures and waterways
- checking if there are any specific restrictions or permit requirements—read the information and tips on freshwater boating
- being aware of the recreational fishing rules and regulations when fishing in waterways and dams in Queensland
- following tips for swimming in creeks, lakes, rivers and dams.

- the green marker indicates open
- the grey marker indicates temporarily closed
- the black square indicates permanently closed—no public access.
Dams and weirs open to the public
Charles Lloyd Jones Weir
- Located on the Alice River, 15km south west of Barcaldine

- Dry weather access only
- Access to weir wall and structures is not permitted
- Council picnic and camping area with big rig access, public toilets, shelter, tables, fire pits and bins, recreational fishing
- Water is not suitable for drinking
- Mobile reception
Copperfield River Gorge (Kidston) Dam—closed temporarily due to flooding
- Located on the Copperfield River near Kidston, 72km south of Einasleigh

- Dry weather access only
- Dam road will be closed temporarily (locked gates) during and after flooding
- Access to dam wall and structures is not permitted
- Access across the causeway to eastern bank is not permitted
- Public toilets, showers, bin, gravel boat ramp, recreational fishing
- Camping area is on private property at landowners discretion, no dogs or firearms permitted
- Water is not suitable for drinking
Corella Dam
- Located on the Corella River 50km west of Cloncurry

- Dry weather access only
- Dam road will be closed temporarily (locked gates) during and after flooding
- Access to dam wall and structures is not permitted
- No camping in the signed spillway area
- Council picnic and camping areas with public toilets, picnic shelters, BBQ’s, bins and gravel boat ramp, recreational fishing
- Water is not suitable for drinking
- Poor mobile reception
East Leichhardt Dam
Access to the dam via private property at landholders discretion.
- Located on private property on the East Leichhardt River 30km east of Mount Isa

- Dry weather access only, four wheel drive recommended
- Access to dam wall is not permitted
- No camping in the signed spillway area
- Gravel boat ramp, recreational fishing
- Bush camping on private property at landowners discretion, no dogs or firearms permitted

Isis River Barrage
- Located on the Isis River 25km east of Childers

Jumna Dam
- Located on a tributary of Jumna Creek 5km south-west of Irvinebank and 20km west of Herberton

Loudon Dam
- Located on Gibbs Creek in the heritage town of Irvinebank, 20km west of Herberton

- Progress Society picnic and camping area nearby, with public toilets, showers picnic shelters and bins
