Multicultural mental health coordinator support
The Multicultural Mental Health Coordinator program is a state-wide program closely integrated with the Queensland Transcultural Mental Health Centre. Multicultural Mental Health Coordinators (MMHCs) are employed by local mental health services and act at a local level if people from diverse cultural backgrounds need them.
What MMHCs do
To make sure the mental health care meets the cultural needs of a patient, MMHCs:
- take part in case discussions
- do joint assessments and reviews of case management
- share information about referrals to multicultural organisations
- tell mental health care specialists how their patients can access specialist multicultural resources
- deliver cultural competency training to mental health Hospital and Health Service staff
- help organisations create quality and safety policies and procedures
- strengthen mental health services' abilities to be culturally responsive to their patients’ needs.
