Compare and choose electricity retailers
To find the best electricity deal, you can:
- use Energy Made Easy to compare and choose electricity deals by electricity retailers
- contact your current electricity retailer to ask for a better electricity deal.
If you need help using the Energy Made Easy website, call the Australian Energy Regulator infoline on 1300 585 165.
Retailers are not allowed to disclose your account information to a third party without your consent unless it is required or authorised under an Australian law. If you’ve asked someone to speak to your retailer for you, you’ll need to stand by to provide that authorisation.
Tips for choosing or switching electricity retailers
- Check that the new electricity plan will save you money - compare the conditions, benefits and costs of your current plan against the plans you are considering.
- Read the conditions associated with any discount being offered.
- Check the payment terms for flexible options.
- Check exit fees.
- Use the cooling off period (10 days) to evaluate your new contract - you can change your mind.
- Check your electricity contract at least annually and reconsider your plan and alternative offers in the market.
South East Queensland electricity customers
If you live in South East Queensland, you can choose your electricity retailer.
Regional Queensland electricity customers
If you live in regional Queensland, you can choose your electricity retailer and choose from their market offers, or request to be charged at the regulated (i.e. notified) prices which are set annually by the Queensland Competition Authority, providing the retailer is operating in your area.
If you're in regional Queensland and currently with a private market retailer, you still have the option to return to Ergon Energy Retail.
Moving house
If you are moving house, you can choose your new electricity retailer.
Note: Real estate agents may suggest a particular electricity retailer, but you do not have to agree to using this company.
Solar power
Some electricity retailers have offers for new or existing rooftop solar power customers.
Read about what feed-in tariffs are being offered.
Note: If you are receiving the Solar Bonus Scheme feed-in tariff and maintain your eligibility, you will not lose this feed-in tariff rate by looking for a better electricity deal. The Solar Bonus Scheme closed to new customers in 2012.
Multi-unit complexes
Residents in multi-unit complexes can choose to use an electricity retailer to power their home, rather than using their site owner, provided a retailer is willing to make an offer.
