Planning a wedding is exciting and many couples want to book their date before they meet with us. Your interview must be at least 1 month before your wedding date.

You can choose your date before your interview appointment—fees will apply.

If you would like to view the Riverbend Terrace, please contact the Brisbane Powerhouse directly.

Not from Brisbane?

If you live outside Southeast Queensland and want to get married at the Brisbane Powerhouse by the Brisbane registry, but can’t attend an interview in person, we want to help.

First choose your ceremony date and we will work with you to plan your special day with us.

Your interview with us

At your first meeting with us, our experienced celebrant team will help you and your partner to:

  • lodge your completed  notice of intended marriage application form
  • book a date and time for your wedding—before you arrive for your interview, you should both agree on at least 3 preferred ceremony dates (unless you already booked online)
  • show your original proof of ID and eligibility documents
  • order a marriage certificate
  • pay the fee
  • tell us if you have any special requirements (e.g. wheelchair access).

If either of you do not speak and understand English, you need to bring someone who can translate for you.

Before your interview you will need to complete the notice of intended marriage form—if you book online we will email it to you.

On the day of your ceremony

To make sure your wedding is the day you hoped for, it’s important to know what to expect.

We have a few tips to help you be ready and to make sure your big day runs smoothly.

|

Witnesses

You must have at least 2 guests at your wedding to witness the ceremony and sign the marriage certificate. Your witnesses can be family or friends and do not need to be Australian citizens.

They need to:

  • be 18 or older
  • speak and understand English
  • be at the entire ceremony.

We cannot supply witnesses for you.

An interpreter

If you or your partner do not speak or understand English, you will need to bring along an interpreter to the ceremony.

An interpreter can be either:

or

  • someone who understands and speaks both languages and is not one of the people getting married or one of the witnesses.

Your celebrant will ask them to sign a statutory declaration of their ability to interpret on the day of your ceremony.

Arrive at the Brisbane Powerhouse at least 15 minutes before the start of your ceremony time with your 2 witnesses, any additional guests and an interpreter, if required.

The ceremony will take about 15 minutes and you will have the room for 30 minutes only.

It’s very important that you arrive on time as we marry up to 10 couples on a weekday.

Before your ceremony your celebrant will:

  • meet with you both separately to sign the declaration of no legal impediment
  • confirm who your witnesses are for the ceremony
  • confirm how you would like to be announced to your guests—for example, ‘husband and wife’.

During the ceremony:

  • your celebrant will say certain words which are required by law to make the marriage legal
  • you will both exchange your vows
  • you may exchange rings
  • both of you, along with your celebrant and 2 witnesses will sign the ceremonial certificate and official certificate of marriage. You will receive your ceremonial certificate on the day.

After the ceremony:

  • you will have time to take photos with your family and friends
  • your celebrant will register your marriage and post an official marriage certificate (if ordered) the next business day.
