Unit pricing code review

The Retail Grocery Industry (Unit Pricing) Code of Conduct (the Code) is a mandatory industry code. It requires certain grocery retailers to use unit pricing when selling particular grocery items to consumers.

Unit pricing is a comparison tool of convenience for consumers. It allows shoppers to make accurate and timely price comparisons between different brands and sizes based on weight, volume or unit.

Consultation

The Australian Government held a consultation on the Code via The Treasury. Consultation included a short consumer survey and public submissions.

Consumers were asked to have their say on:

  • when and how you use unit prices
  • whether it saves you time and/or money
  • how unit prices are displayed.

The consultation closed on 28 February 2019.
