Blue cards for justice and detention services

You will need a blue card if any work is carried out in a youth detention facility or, you supervise/monitor a child who is subject to a court order under the Youth Justice Act 1992.

If your employment or volunteer work includes supervising or monitoring a child under any of the below orders imposed by a Court under the Youth Justice Act 1992, you will also need a blue card.

  • A community-based order
  • A supervised release order
  • Any other order made or imposed by a court under that act

Workers and volunteers

If you are paid or volunteer to work in a youth detention centre, you will need a blue card.

Examples

A blue card is needed for:

  • personnel of a youth detention centre (with exception of corrective service officers)
  • counsellors or support workers providing support to a child at a youth detention centre
  • educators providing tuition within a youth detention the centre
  • cleaners at a youth detention centre facility
  • a person who supervises a child that is subject to a supervised release order or community-based order

A blue card is not needed for:

  • Queensland Corrective Services employee working in their professional capacity under the Corrective Services Act 2006.
  • an AHPRA registered psychologist providing a psychological assessment to a child who has a court order.
  • ambulance officers providing emergency medical assistance to a child within a detention centre.

Business owners and operators

If you own or operate a youth detention centre or a business that supervises or monitors children under a community based, supervised or other order under the Youth Justice Act 1992, you will need a blue card.

Examples

A blue card is needed for:

  • a business operator/owner whose business provides services or activities to children who have court order but are not in a detention centre.

A blue card is not needed for:

  • a business operator/owner whose business provides monitoring or supervisory services to adults who have a community based order.
