Virtual visits with a prisoner
Queensland Corrective Services recognises the importance of visits to prisoners.
At times it may not be an option to attend a correctional centre to visit your friend or family member.
Virtual visits are another way you can keep in touch. We call them ‘virtual personal visits’ or VPV.
Prisoners can access video call pods for virtual visits. These pods are different to prisoner video conferencing rooms (used for legal meetings and court appearances).
Virtual visits can last for up to 30 minutes.
Applying for virtual visits
To apply, follow the same application process for in-person visits.
If you only want to apply for a VPV, tick the box on the form.
Booking a virtual visit
If your application is approved, you can call or email the correctional centre to book. Each centre has their own contact details and visiting times.
Once booked, you will receive a confirmation email with a visit time and a ‘join meeting’ link.
We’ll also include a user guide to help you access the meeting on your mobile or computer.
Starting the virtual visit
Before the visit time, click the ‘join meeting’ link in the email. You’ll be prompted to install an application on your device. Follow the instructions in the user guide to set it up.
Once it’s installed and you’ve joined the meeting, an officer needs to check your identity. They’ll ask you to show your photo ID or 2 forms of non-photo ID.
The officer will also monitor the meeting, similar to a contact or non-contact visit.
You must follow the rules that apply to in person visits. They will end the meeting if you:
- break the rules
- behave in an inappropriate way.
