Cocaine added to Queensland roadside drug tests

From 7 July 2023, police will be able to test drivers for cocaine through roadside drug testing.

The Queensland Government has expanded the roadside drug test to include this drug following an increase in the involvement of drivers testing positive to cocaine in the past 5 years.

Cocaine can have a significant impact on the ability to drive like:

• feeling overconfident
• losing concentration
• driving aggressively or taking more risks
• difficulty focussing on driving.

Drivers who test positive to any presence of cocaine, cannabis, speed, ice or ecstasy will have their licence disqualified for a minimum of one month and may face fines of up to $2,167 for a first offence and jail time.

Adding cocaine to the drugs tested for on the roadside is part of a package of drug driving reforms committed to in the Queensland Road Safety Action Plan 2022–2024.
