You can choose to continue with your own counsellor if they are willing to register with the Redress Counselling Program, or a counsellor who is already registered on the Trauma Support Directory. The directory includes the following types of practitioners:
counsellors
psychologists
social workers
mental health nurses
psychiatrists
occupational therapists
general practitioners
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers.
You can also contact the Redress Counselling Team for help to find a counsellor.
The Redress Counselling Team is located within the Department of Child Safety, Seniors and Disability Services, and supports all Queenslanders who accept an offer of Counselling and psychological care from the National Redress Scheme.
If you would like to contact someone about accessing counselling and psychological services in Queensland, the Counselling Team can explain how the program works, help you understand your needs and provide information about counsellors and practitioners.
The Team is located within the Department of Children, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs, and supports all Queenslanders who accept an offer of Counselling and psychological care from the National Redress Scheme.
Counsellors registered on the Trauma Support Directory have qualifications, knowledge and skill in working with adults who have experienced complex trauma, including childhood sexual abuse.
The directory has a range of practitioners who can help you, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers, counsellors, psychologists, social workers, mental health nurses, and occupational therapists.
If you are already seeing a counsellor, they can choose to register on the directory or register directly with the Redress Counselling Program.
Your chosen counsellor can contact the Redress Counselling Team on 1800 569 100 or email redresscounselling@cyjma.qld.gov.au. If they choose to register on the directory they will find the information they need to register on the Trauma Support website.
Once your counsellor or practitioner has registered—or if they are already registered—they can find more information about how to support you on this National Redress Scheme in Queensland website.
Counsellors on the directory are not endorsed or approved by us (the Queensland Government). The directory sets the minimum qualifications and experience counsellors need to have to be paid under the Queensland counselling and psychological care arrangements.
People who receive redress have the choice of who can best meet their counselling and psychological support needs. You are encouraged to discuss your needs with a counsellor, do your own research to determine which counsellor may be best for you, or seek support to help you decide.
The Redress Counselling Team can help you understand your needs and provide information about available counsellors. Contact us on 1800 569 100 or email redresscounselling@cyjma.qld.gov.au for support to help you understand your needs or select a counsellor..
If you are dissatisfied with your counsellor, you are free to choose a different counsellor that may better respond to your needs.
If your preferred counsellor does not know about the Queensland arrangements for redress counselling and psychological care, they can find information on this website or they can contact us at redresscounselling@cyjma.qld.gov.au or phone 1800 569 100.
There are requirements that counsellors must meet to be able to provide you with a service and be paid for the service.
