Creating and securing your Queensland Digital Identity
Your QGov digital identity is becoming a Queensland Digital Identity
If you used to log in to Queensland Government online services with a QGov digital identity, you will soon be using a Queensland Digital Identity instead. Visit the QGov-Queensland Digital Identity transition for more information.
When signing up for your Queensland Digital Identity you will be guided through the signup process that allows you to create your digital identity confirming who you say you are using your government issued documents.
You will need to complete all of the steps to successfully create and secure your Queensland Digital Identity (QDI).
The QDI is currently only used to authenticate Digital Licence app users.
We recommend you complete the QDI signup process in a single session if possible, to comply with best practice around security.
However, if you leave the sign up page before you have completed it, you can return at a later time to complete the process. Your progress will be saved and you will return to the next relevant step in the process, but you will need to select Login when you return. You will then need to use the email address and password you specified in Step 1 to continue.
If you experience issues creating, securing or logging in to your QDI, refer to the troubleshooting page for assistance.
Is a QDI mandatory?
Currently, you only need to get a QDI if you wish to use the Digital Licence app.
In the future, the QDI will replace the existing QGov login to access Queensland Government online services. If you wish to transact online, the QDI will be one of the login options available when you are trying to use a Queensland Government agency online service. If you do not wish to use an online service, you will need to contact the agency to discuss how they can assist.
Steps to create and secure your QDI
Step 1: Provide your email address and create a password
The email address must be an email that you have access to and is unique–it can't be shared and used for another QDI. If you share an email address with someone, you will need to use a separate email address.
Create a password that must be at least 8 characters in length, and contain 3 of the following:
- lower-case letter (a–z)
- upper-case letter (A–Z)
- number (0-9)
- special character (!@#$%^&*).
Step 2: Read and accept the terms and conditions, and privacy notice
These will tell you how we will collect your information, and what it will be used for. You can read them online by visiting the QDI Terms and Conditions and Privacy Notice if you wish to re-read them later.
Step 3: Verify your email address
We will send a validation code to the email address you provided in Step 1. You will need to enter the code to continue. The code will expire after 3 minutes but you can request another code if it expires.
If you do not receive the email, check your Junk or Spam folders first, or request another validation code email to be sent through the Resend the validation email link on the app screen.
Step 4: Set up multi-factor authentication
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is required for your Queensland Digital Identity as an extra layer of protection.
MFA means that each time you use your Queensland Digital Identity email address and password to log in, we will check that it is really you, by sending a code to your mobile device. To set up MFA, enter your mobile phone number. You will be sent a code via SMS to enter into the app which will verify your MFA.
All Australian and most international mobile numbers can be used for MFA.
Step 5: Verify your identity
You need to provide information from certain credentials (for example, government issued identity documents and ID cards) which we will use to verify your identity. If the names on your credentials don't match, you will need to provide evidence of the name change in Step 5.
The information must be entered exactly as it appears on each credential. If the information is not entered correctly the verification will fail. You have up to 5 attempts to enter the information correctly otherwise you will need to close the app and login to try again.
You need to provide one credential from the first group, and one credential from the second group in the following table.
We appreciate that multiple verification steps take time to complete, however the additional security is vital to keep your private information safe and secure, which is a top priority.
You only need to verify your identity once – after your identity has been verified, you will only need to login with your QDI username and password in the future.
Please note: The documents in this table will change once the QGov digital identity has been transitioned into a QDI.
First credential | Second credential |

If you do not have any of the second credential documents, you will need to complete the QDI sign-up process up to and including the first credential. Once this is done, call us on 1800 317 389 to discuss your options.
If you have an Adult Proof-of-Age card which has not expired, you will still be able to sign up for a QDI, using the details from your Adult Proof-of-Age card.
The information you provide while verifying your identity will be kept safe and secure, and protected by best practice security measures. We only retain the minimum information needed by us in order to establish your QDI and keep it secure.
Provide evidence of your name change, if required
This step is if you have changed your name through marriage or a change of name certificate, and the credentials you need to provide don't match.
If you changed your name you will be asked to enter details from your Australian marriage or change of name certificate.
You will need to contact us to continue if you changed your name by any other method.
You only need to complete the process of setting up your QDI once – the next time you are asked for your QDI, you can log in using your email address, password, and multi-factor authentication.
Setting up your passkey
While setting up a QDI, you may be asked if you want to set up a Passkey. A Passkey is a method used to authenticate you, as an alternative to a password or PIN. It is a highly secure method of signing in to a service or site, using your face scan or fingerprint touch, as you would to sign in to the device itself. The Passkey can be stored on your phone or on a separate device or drive.
Regardless of whether you choose to use Passkey or not, you will still be able to create a QDI.
