Add a category to your security industry licence
You can upgrade your existing class 1 security licence by adding any of the following categories to it:
- unarmed security officer
- monitoring security officer
- dog patrol security officer
- cash-in-transit security officer.
Licences categories can be issued for 1 or 3 years.
How to apply
Complete the Application for a security licence (Class 1) form (Form 1-1). Tick the upgrade box and indicate in Part 1, which category (or categories) you’d like to add.
You can lodge your application form in person at an OFT contact centre or by post to:
Office of Fair Trading
GPO Box 3111
BRISBANE QLD 4001
You must attach evidence of any relevant training modules you’ve completed for that licence category.
You won’t need to attach your certified identification documents again or undergo another criminal history check.
Fees
When you apply, you need to pay the relevant fee for each category you’re adding to your licence.
If you already hold a multiple-function security licence and want to add another category to it, you’ll only need to pay the licence reprint fee.
The fees are the same when upgrading your licence mid-term or at renewal time.
Training requirements
If you’ve not held the licence category before—or held it more than 12 months ago—you’ll need to complete the required training modules and attach evidence of training to your application before we can add the new category to your licence.
Anyone who hasn’t completed training since 2020 (when a new training package started) will need to undertake (or redo) the training.
If you’ve held the same category in the last 12 months, you won’t need to complete further training unless you’re a bodyguard or crowd controller. Bodyguards and crowd controllers must show evidence of having completed the required training modules that are due.
Processing timeframe
Your application will take 2 weeks to process, unless:
- you need to give us more information or pay the relevant fees
- you apply to renew your licence at the same time.
