Ongoing requirements for crowd controllers

This page provides information about your ongoing requirements to keep your crowd controller licence. For example, you must:

  • display appropriate identification (ID) when working as a crowd controller
  • renew your crowd controller licence before it expires–you can't work on an expired licence
  • update your address details with the Office of Fair Trading within 7 days of moving.

As a crowd controller you must wear identification (ID) when working.

Your ID must:

  • be issued by the venue
  • be attached to your clothes at chest level—it can't be an armband or a lanyard.

Your ID must be written in black numbers and letters on a white background that includes:

  • the word 'SECURITY' in capital letters that are at least 10mm high and 2mm thick
  • a unique number—for each crowd controller—in letters that are at least 30mm high and 4mm thick.

Your uniform can't be too similar to a police uniform as it may confuse some people. For example, it can't include or feature an image of a hat with a chequerboard design or band.

As a licensed crowd controller, you must keep your knowledge of industry standards and techniques up to date through ongoing training.

  • The dates you need to complete ongoing training are provided with your licence—you must complete the required training units before their expiry dates.
  • You're responsible for completing required training and submitting your results before the expiry date.
  • Your licence can be cancelled if you don't complete your training.

Every 12 months

Your CPR training (HLTAID009—Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation) needs to be refreshed every 12 months (Find a training provider).

Every 3 years

You must complete these training modules every 3 years to refresh your knowledge and skills:

Submit your results

At least 2 months before your licence expires, you must send us your official statement of attainment and record of results as proof you’ve completed your training. Your training provider will issue these documents.

You can face disciplinary action if you don’t lodge them on time. This may result in us cancelling your licence.

You can submit them by:

We'll post you a renewal notice about 6 weeks before your licence expires. Make sure to tell us if you change your address.

You can also renew your licence online—select Fair Trading Individual Renewal Application.

You need your licence number to get started. Find out how to use Fair Trading online services.

If you submit your renewal form and pay the fee before your current licence expires, you can keep working while your renewal application is processed.

While it's being processed, you must be able to produce your expired licence and a renewal fee payment receipt (contact us to ask for a receipt).

If your current licence has expired, it can't be renewed—you'll need to apply for a new crowd controller licence. You must not work until you're properly licensed again.

Fingerprinting

If your fingerprints are already on record, you won't need to provide them again. If you've never had your fingerprints taken for your security licence, you must do that when you renew your licence.
