Accessory number plates and how to apply

When an accessory plate is required

You are required to display an accessory number plate if you have a vehicle accessory such as a bicycle or wheelchair rack on your vehicle that blocks the view of your front or rear number plate.

An accessory number plate ensures your number plate complies with visibility requirements. Find out about number plate visibility requirements.

An accessory plate is not designed to be used as a replacement for a standard number plate, it is designed to be used temporarily in conjunction with the standard number plate. If an accessory is not in use, it is recommended it be removed unless specifically approved to remain attached.

An accessory number plate is not required if a registered trailer blocks the view of your vehicle’s number plate but the trailer’s plate is visible.
