How to replace number plates
To replace your plates, whether you are replacing standard, personalised, customised or an accessory number plate, you can visit a transport and motoring customer service centre. If you live in a rural area, contact a QGAP office, Magistrates Court or local police station that provides vehicle registration services—please call to confirm before visiting.

If your number plates are missing, you can be fined for using the vehicle without plates attached as required.
You will need to:
- bring your old plate/s (unless lost or stolen)
- fill in the:
- bring evidence of your identity:
- if the vehicle is registered in a business or company name, the person representing the company must have personal identification and provide evidence of representation, such as being in uniform or showing work identification
- if your vehicle is registered in 2 names, either person can sign to replace standard plates and provide identification
- if personalised or customised plates are in 2 names they must both sign the application and both provide identification.
- pay the fee:
- to replace standard plates with the same or a different plate number
- check PPQ for the fee cost of a personalised plate.
If you are replacing an eligible number plate because your plates were stolen or lost, damaged or destroyed due to a crime committed by someone else, no fee will apply. If the number plates were personalised or customised, you will be provided a replacement standard number plates free of charge.
Any accessory plate associated with the stolen plates will be replaced free of charge.
When you apply for your replacement number plates, you must declare that the information you have provided us is true and correct.
The penalty for providing false or misleading information is up to $10,000.

Surrendering number plates
When you hand your form in, you will need to hand over your old plates as well. If you cannot hand over your plates (because they were lost, stolen or destroyed), you will need to explain on the form what happened to them.
Receiving replacement plates
Standard plates
If you are getting replacement plates that are not customised or personalised, you will get them immediately. You will get a new number plate combination. You must attach number plates within 1 day of receiving them but not drive the vehicle until attached.
You may be fined for using a vehicle without number plate/s attached.
Personalised and customised plates
If you are applying for the same plate number (these are known as customised plates) or personalised plates, your new plates will be ordered and mailed to you. Keep your old plates attached until you receive the new plates.
If 1 customised or personalised plate is missing for a vehicle with 2 plates, after you have applied for a replacement, you can keep the old plate on the rear of your vehicle and drive until you receive your new plates.
You must hand in the old plate/s when the new plate/s arrive.
You may otherwise be fined for using a vehicle without a plate/s attached.
