About the Games

Queensland will host the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games (the Games) over four weeks (29 days) with the Olympic Games hosted from 23 July to 8 August 2032 and the Paralympic Games to be hosted from 24 August to 5 September 2032.

The ‘Green and Gold Runway’ into 2032 and the decade after will provide extraordinary opportunities for communities across Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and Oceania. It is a chance to showcase our unique landscapes, celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures as the oldest continuing living cultures in the world, display our creativity and share our way of life with the world.

Hosting the Games represents a significant investment in our future, and its legacy can create economic, societal and environmental changes that will make our diverse region even more inclusive, sustainable, connected, liveable and prosperous.

The bid phase

It all started in 2015 when the South East Queensland Council of Mayors started investigating a regional Olympic and Paralympic Games proposal to accelerate infrastructure investment, boost jobs and attract tourism.

The Queensland Government established a Taskforce in July 2019 to determine the merits of hosting the Games and five months later all levels of government were united behind a collaborative effort to try to become the newest Olympic and Paralympic city.

The Taskforce prepared the Value Proposition Assessment (VPA), with input and guidance from relevant Queensland Government agencies, Australian and local government representatives and technical consultants. The assessment was prepared to inform the Queensland Government on the value proposition, including costs, benefits and legacy opportunities of hosting the Games.

KPMG was commissioned to undertake a preliminary analysis of the economic, social and environment impacts of hosting the Games, which have since been updated. The findings are available in the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games – KPMG Summary Report.

The Queensland Government worked alongside the Australian Olympic Committee, Paralympics Australia, other government agencies and the IOC Future Host Commission to prepare a submission to the IOC.

In February 2021 Queensland entered into targeted dialogue with the IOC and was granted ‘preferred host’ status, before making a final submission to the IOC in May 2021.

The Future Host Commission recommended to the IOC Executive Board that Brisbane’s proposal be put to a vote, which was set down for 21 July 2021. The IOC members voted in favour of Brisbane, Queensland being awarded hosting rights for the Games.
