More protection for the Great Barrier Reef
The world-renowned Great Barrier Reef and its unique ecosystem has been further protected thanks to the Great Barrier Reef Island Arks project.
One hundred and forty islands or parts thereof within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, with a combined total of 1390 hectares, have been acquired and added to Queensland’s protected areas estate.
Securing these parts of the Great Barrier Reef means that endangered and of-concern ecosystems and habitat for important species such as green and flatback turtles, seabirds and shorebirds are preserved and protected.
The Queensland Government is investing $262.5 million through the Protected Area Strategy to continue securing habitat and protecting them for generations to come.
