Mount Taylor Park remediation project

The Mount Taylor Park site was a gold mine from around 1915 through to the mid-1950s. Excavated areas and a tailings dam were progressively filled with hazardous contaminants and municipal waste as a waste disposal site until the site was redeveloped as residential land by the Logan City Council during the 1980s.

As a consequence of land contamination issues and impacts to residents, the site was resumed, houses removed, and residents compensated and relocated.

In 1991, the Queensland Government and Logan City Council remediated the site to contain and control contamination issues, enabling the site to be used as a landscaped parkland. The ground surface has since been capped with multiple engineered layers.

The site comprises 3 land parcels – Lot 1 on CP856115 (1.47 ha), Lot 2 on CP856116 (6.24 ha) and Lot 1234 on SL8168 (0.06 ha) – and is listed on the Environmental Management Register (EMR) for the notifiable activity of storing hazardous mine wastes due to previous gold mining activities.

The site is currently used as recreation and open space. Two land parcels of the site, Lot 1 on CP856115 and Lot 2 on CP856116, are subject to an approved site management plan under the Environmental Protection Act 1994.
