Applications usually take 4 to 6 weeks to process. It can take longer if you haven’t supplied all the information we need or paid the correct fees.
You must be registered as a subagent to do regulated work for a field agent (debt collector, re-possessor or process server).
You don't need to be registered to perform evictions or repossess vacant real property.
Note: Subagents can only work as employees.
To be registered, you must be 18 or older. You don't need to complete any training for this registration.
What subagents do
Registered subagents can:
find and recover goods (repossession)
collect debts face to face
serve documents (process serving).
They can also work as a collection agent as long as they only collect debts (don't repossess goods or do process serving) and contact debtors by phone or in writing.
You must have a field agent licence to do any other type of work as a debt collector or process server.
You must attach the following supporting documents to your application (where relevant).
Proof of identity
When you lodge the form, you will need to attach 100 points of certified identification (ID)—the points are explained on the application form.
Please don't post originals or email us copies of your certified ID.
If you're not an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you need to:
give us a certified copy of your passport
have a visa that allows you to work in Australia.
Photographs
You will need to attach 2 passport-sized photos of yourself.
They must be certified (signed, dated and declared as a true copy) by someone who:
is 18 or older
has known you for at least 12 months
isn't your spouse or de facto partner
isn't a family member (by blood or marriage).
Insolvency information (if relevant)
If you are an insolvent under administration, you will need to attach a letter from your current employer, on their company letterhead, that:
outlines your role in the company
states if you will be in a position to significantly influence how they manage their business.
You must also explain in writing:
how you became an insolvent under administration (if this was your business, also advise the type of business)
what steps you took to avoid going into insolvency
how much you owe to each creditor (list them all by name and amount)
whether you faced any charges relating to the insolvency.
