Audience

Think about who you are trying to communicate with. When you are communicating, it is important to:

  • consider diversity of gender, age, background or culture
  • carefully choose your words—simple is always best
  • think about your tone—do you want to be friendly, welcoming, important, urgent?
  • consider how much your audience already knows
  • consider how much information you need to share and what is the best way to share that information.

Ask people what their communication needs are. If communicating to many people, do some research so you understand your audience and how they need information. Remember how you are communicating is also important—reading words on a page can be different to reading words on a screen.
