Images and diagrams are a great way to share important information and you can make sure that important information in images is accessible for everyone.
Top tips for image accessibility
- Make sure images display on different devices – including phones, tablets and computers.
- Use image descriptions and alternative text so people using screen readers can access the information.
- Make sure that colour is not the only visual way to understand information e.g. charts or maps with red or green lines may not be accessible to people who are colour blind.
- Graphs, charts and maps can be hard to describe so write a short description of these as alt text and link to a longer description of the image.
- Add captions. Start with the word caption, then add an image description.
- Use alt text to describe images as decorative only.
- Use alt text to describe icons.
- Make sure there is a strong colour contrast so your text is easy to read. You can check your word and PDF documents with this colour contrast checker.
