Nambour material recovery facility

Construction of the $40.5 million Nambour material recovery facility was funded through an agreement between all levels of government, with $21.9 million from the Queensland Government’s Recycling and Jobs Fund, $13.5 million from Council and a $5.1 million joint contribution from Australian and Queensland governments under the Queensland Recycling Modernisation Fund.

The state-of-the-art material recovery facility, also known as a MRF, uses optical sorting to sort paper and cardboard at 98 per cent purity – the highest quality of any Australian facility.

The infrastructure has the capacity to process more than 60,000 tonnes of material each year, recovering valuable resources and supporting Queensland on its journey to meet waste targets and create a zero-waste society.

Waste management plans have been established for regions across Queensland with one of the priorities being the delivery of new and improved infrastructure to facilitate greater uptake of resource recovery services.

The facility has established more jobs for the region in the facility where materials are sorted and baled, and then distributed to specialist manufacturers. From the materials recovered a range of new products can be made such as packaging and paper products right through to road base and outdoor furniture.

The facility is a step forward in innovation, resource recovery and support of a circular economy for Queensland.
