Whatever your situation, if you or someone you know needs help, there is a wide range of housing with appropriate supports to help recover from crisis.

Emergency accommodation options

If you’re experiencing homelessness or are housed but at risk of homelessness—including experiencing domestic and family violence you can call:

Ask Izzy can help you to search for nearby shelters, housing, food, health care and homeless information.

Contact your nearest Housing Service Centre for information on housing and accessing rental assistance.

Women's shelters (sometimes called 'refuges') provide safe and secure accommodation for women and children escaping domestic violence in their homes or community. Placement in a shelter can be arranged by contacting DVConnect Womensline on 1800 811 811.

Access a list of organisations that can provide you with information about emergency accommodation if you are homeless, escaping violence, or need a meal, shower and clothing.

Help for people living in public housing experiencing domestic, family or sexual violence

If you are worried that the violence you are experiencing is going to affect your tenancy or where you are living now, please contact your nearest Housing Service Centre

There are protections to help:

  • You can vacate your public housing property immediately.
  • You won't be responsible for costs for
    • property damage caused due to domestic, family or sexual violence
    • goods left behind at the public housing property.
  • You can change the locks to the public housing property without our consent or ask us to do this on your behalf.

Help if I am renting

Tenants Queensland

If you are experiencing domestic and family violence and you want to leave a rental property because you do not feel safe or you are worried about how it will affect your tenancy, Tenants Queensland provides information on the process outlined in the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008 (Qld) (the Act) depending on if you are:

  1. the sole tenant
  2. a co-tenant
  3. an occupant but not a tenant or sub-tenant
  4. not responsible for the tenancy but want to end the perpetrator’s agreement

RentConnect

The RentConnect service helps Queenslanders find and apply for a place to rent.

This service may help you if you’re struggling to access the private rental market due to non-financial barriers, such as:

  • limited rental history
  • a lack of skills, knowledge or understanding of how the private rental market works
  • a lack of documents required for private rental applications.

RentConnect provides a range of information and practical assistance to help you overcome these barriers.

RentConnect Advisory Service

Housing Service Centre staff across Queensland can provide general advice and information on private rental and other housing assistance products. RentConnect is available in 18 Housing Service Centres.

Staff can provide one-on-one assistance and referrals for people who need more tailored information and advice to find and secure a home in the private rental market.

They can also help people strengthen their skills to maintain their private rental tenancy.

National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS)

The National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) aims to reduce rental costs for low to medium income households and increase the number of more affordable rental houses.

Bond loans and rental grants

A Bond Loan is an interest-free and fee-free loan to cover the rental bond when you move into private rental accommodation.

A Rental Grant is a one-off grant of 2 weeks rent to support people in housing crisis move into private rental accommodation.

Applying for housing in a remote Indigenous community

To be eligible for public housing and community housing in a Remote and discrete Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community, you must:

  • be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and/or have permission from the Council or Trustee to live on the community
  • meet the eligibility criteria for public and community housing.
