About this program

Graduating from medical school this year? Join our Queensland Health medical internships where you'll receive the skills and experience to be fully prepared for your career in medicine. Our internships are available across a range of major metropolitan cities, regional centres and rural communities.

All of our intern training facilities are accredited against approved standards ensuring your year will be rich in learning opportunities, with valuable hands-on supervised experience, and high-level support provided by our well-regarded Medical Education units.

Program eligibility

You are eligible to apply if you:

  • are graduating from a Queensland medical school this year
  • have not previously completed an internship in Australia or overseas
  • have obtained registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • are an Australian or New Zealand citizen
  • are an Australian permanent resident
  • have a visa with unrestricted working rights under Australian immigration law.

Additional information for international students

You are eligible to apply if you:

  • can provide evidence of your visa type, status and entitlements to work prior to starting employment with us. Right to work must be maintained through employment. For more information on right to work and visa conditions visit the Department of Home Affairs.
  • have obtained overseas qualification recognition if you received your degree outside of Australia.

Applications for the 2026 intake will open on Tuesday 6 May 2025.

Our recruitment process

Submit your application via the online portal with all supporting documentation.

Once applications close, you'll be allocated an applicant group.

You will either be directly allocated to an intern position determined by their preferences (Group A) or will participate in a suitability assessment process conducted by participating hospitals with remaining intern vacancies (Applicant Groups B-D).

If you don't meet the criteria for Groups A, B, C or D, you may be considered at the discretion of each participating hospital.

Your employing facility will contact you to commence pre-employment and onboarding activities.
